Dhaka, Bangladesh – Naheed Islam, advisor to the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, has called on the United Nations to conduct a thorough investigation into alleged human rights abuses committed during recent student protests.

During a meeting with a UN delegation led by Rory Mungoven, the Asia-Pacific Regional Director for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Islam expressed concern over the violence that erupted during the demonstrations.

"We have achieved our independence through many sacrifices, and we have the support of all people," Islam said. "The people have certain expectations of us, and we are working to fulfill those commitments while maintaining national unity."

Islam emphasized that the interim government is prioritizing three key areas: reforming state institutions, providing compensation and rehabilitation to victims and their families, and ensuring justice for those responsible for the violence.

"We appreciate the continued support of the UN and human rights organizations," Islam added. "We had previously warned them about the possibility of a crackdown by the previous government, and unfortunately, our fears were realized. We want the UN to conduct a fair investigation so that the world can see what happened in Bangladesh during the protests and the brutality faced by the student protesters."

Mungoven commended the interim government and expressed admiration for the courage shown by the Bangladeshi people, particularly the youth, in defending democracy and human rights. He viewed this as an opportunity for Bangladesh.

Asif Mahmud Sajid Bhuyan, advisor to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, highlighted the government's commitment to combating corruption and politicization in sports. He also emphasized the importance of addressing the issues faced by workers in Bangladesh, such as those affected by the Rana Plaza tragedy.
