Student Protest Leaders Mull New Political Party

Dhaka Prees News

The recent student-led movement against quota-based government jobs, which successfully ousted Sheikh Hasina's 15-year-long government, has its leaders contemplating the formation of a new political party. With two of their coordinators now serving as advisors on the interim government, the question of whether to transform their movement into a formal political entity has become a hot topic.

As the ruling Awami League grapples with the aftermath of its downfall, the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has seen a surge in popularity. Amidst this political landscape, the student leaders find themselves at a crossroads.

Several coordinators have hinted at the possibility of forming a new party. Nahid Islam, a coordinator and advisor to the interim government, suggested that the youth are ready to take the reins of the country if the people desire. However, other coordinators, like Sarjis Alam, have expressed concerns about the potential impact of such a move on their participation in future elections.

The idea of a youth-led political party that prioritizes integrity and justice has garnered considerable public support. However, not all coordinators are on board with this idea. Umama Fatem, another coordinator, believes that the movement should remain a platform for activism rather than becoming a political party. She fears that transforming the movement into a political entity could lead to the hijacking of the movement by vested interests.

The decision to form a new party is still under discussion among the coordinators. While some are eager to seize the opportunity to shape the country's future, others are more cautious and want to focus on immediate reforms. Regardless of the final decision, the student leaders' influence on Bangladesh's political landscape is undeniable.
