Government Approves Interim Government Ordinance

Dhaka Press News

The government's Advisory Council has given final approval to the draft of the "Interim Government Ordinance, 2024." The decision was made at a council meeting held on Thursday, September 19. The meeting was chaired by Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

A press release issued by the Cabinet Division in the evening confirmed this development. According to the release, following widespread repression and a massacre by the previous Awami League government during the anti-discrimination student movement, people from all walks of life staged mass protests, leading to the resignation of the then Prime Minister on August 5. Subsequently, the President dissolved the 12th National Assembly on August 6.

The press release further stated that in response to this constitutional crisis, the President, in accordance with Article 106 of the Constitution, sought the Supreme Court's opinion on forming an interim government to safeguard national interests and security, maintain the economic system, and carry out the executive functions of the state. The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, in its Special Reference No. 01/2024 dated August 8, opined that the President could appoint a Chief Advisor and other advisors as an interim measure to fill the constitutional vacuum.

Given the prevailing circumstances and in line with the doctrine of necessity, the President formed an interim government on August 8, considering the unanimous desire of the people and the proposals of the representatives of the student movement. To define the powers and responsibilities of the interim government, the status and privileges of the Chief Advisor and advisors, their resignation, and other related matters, the draft of the "Interim Government Ordinance, 2024" was prepared. The Advisory Council has now given its final approval to this draft.
